Punishments do not always fit the crime

Courts need to get the balance right

The way prisoners were treated in Victorian times was very harsh, even barbaric. The idea of someone in the western world today being executed for vandalism or pickpocketing seems at the very least rather an extreme way of dealing with the problem! On the other hand, these days it's possible for someone to kill another human being and walk out of court with little more than a slap on the wrist which is just as preposterous. If you drink alcohol and then willingly get behind the wheel of a car knowing your actions are dangerous and against the law, and cause an accident resulting in someone's death, how can this possibly be seen as a lesser crime compared to stabbing or shooting someone?

Common ground must be found for our judicial system to be effective. Bleeding hearts in today's society want the offenders' needs to be considered, but if someone has deliberately murdered, raped or tortured another person, then expecting them to slop out, spend 23 hours a day in confinement and lose their liberty for good, therefore keeping the rest of society forever safe from their influence, is surely a punishment every victim should rightly expect for their offender?

Execution is something almost everyone has a strong opinion about. Some feel that it makes society as guilty as the criminal, because we are condoning the taking of a life. Others believe an eye for an eye; if you take someone's life then yours should be taken also. There's no denying it costs a small fortune  keeping a prisoner incarcerated for a stretch of time. But do the more hardened criminals and cold blooded murders really need the luxuries our governments insist on supplying them with?  Hard labour, longer sentences and stricter food rations just might prove a deterrent in today's society where comfort means so much to us. Lesser criminals should continue to be educated and rehabilitated back to society. But perhaps it's time we shifted our attentions back to the victims, who are so often forgotten about.

This is a tough subject. I believe laws should be "universal" . Here in Canada, some laws are different even with those of our southern neighbours, the USA, and these laws differ with UK laws and so on an so forth. all these differences is where the true problem lies. IF, we had common laws for all the crimes and they're in operation for at least one generation, then the " OMG what are they doinig over there? " senario would be obsolete. Let me explain that a tad better. Over here in Canada, if you are caught stealing, you go to jail for a period of time then released. Over in the mid east, thieves can lose a hand. WE think, "OMG, what are they doing over there?" If all laws were the same every where then everyone would be ... accustomed to the penalties and therefore the shock of it would be lost in time and laws would be respected for the better... in general theroy i believe. Forensic sciences have come a long way for the determination of proving someone innocent or guilty but still has some way to go before it's 100% fool proof. so, for now i believe universal laws should be the way to.

Appropriate punishment should be given to all grades of criminals by ascertaining the severity of their criminalities and considering the loss and plea of the victim(s) or his family members. I do agree with you that no forbearance should be adopted while implementing the highest penalties for the cold blooded murderers on any occasion. I have read numerous news about many notorious murderers in South Asia who somehow had managed themselves to avail the greatest opportunity to dodge the capital punishment or the life term imprisonment, simply by turning directly from cold blooded murderers to unworldly psychos.

I agree with what you have said. I also think a balance view should be taken before giving judgements. I believe society does create criminals, specially when injustice is being done.

I almost agree. There should be balance in the scale of the crimes. Society should juge on their past and their actions. people have the right to speek what their way that htings are. But the victims sometimes are the criminals.
